ABOUT THE FILM
What is the ‘magic formula’ behind a great musical composition, a solo performed before a packed auditorium, or a simple tune strummed within the four walls of a room?
The answer, to borrow a metaphor often used in travel writing, lies at the crossroads where two creative paths meet: the work of the musician and that of the luthier who crafts the instrument.
There is a very close connection between these two figures, both devote all their efforts to pursuing a common end goal: giving “voice” to the instruments, making them speak.
The story of this very special collaboration lies at the heart of the Snodi project, a documentary series dedicated to the world of artisanal instrument-making.
The first season comprises five episodes, each lasting fifteen minutes, which focus on five different stories, straddling two countries: Switzerland, with the spotlight on the Canton of Ticino, and Italy.
Through extensive research, we have identified the protagonists of each episode, exploring both the deep connections between the various professionals and the different types of instruments, in a blend of the ancient and the modern.
In each episode, we have created a fascinating dialogue to explore the human and professional bond that lies behind the collaborations between these professionals.
This exchange reaches its climax at the end of each episode: when the musician performs an original piece for the luthier, played on the instrument made specifically for him, showing us the final result of the creative process.
Broadcast on ‘Paganini’ on RSI – Swiss Radio and Television, Channel 1
The episode "50% Science, 50% Art" premiered in the "Into the Groove" section at the 9th Seeyousound International Music Film Festival at Cinema Massimo in Turin.
